Derby defeat on Boxing Day
By Derek Lloyd
Cirencester Town 3-2 Highworth Town
The Worthians can count themselves extremely unfortunate to come away from the game at Cirencester Town Town pointless this afternoon after a battling performance on the artificial surface.
After Ash Edenborough just failed to score following a long range effort being parried by home keeper Merchant, Cirencester took the lead on 11 minutes when an Aiden Bennett cross cum shot from wide left found the far top corner of Connor Johns's net. Less than a minute later it was 1-1 when Ash Edenborough won and converted a penalty.
On 16 minutes a thumping header from Baboucarr Jarra from a left wing corner put the home side ahead for a second time. Highworth could have fallen further behind had a close range effort not hit their crossbar but they did gradually get into the game. Sidibi had a shot tipped over and from the resultant corner Wayne Turk's header was saved by Merchant. They did however reach half time level as Sidibi fired into the top corner from 20 yards having been set up by Chris Taylor.
The visitors started strongly in the second half and strong appeals for another penalty were turned down as Edenborough was dumped on the floor again. Edenborough then had a goal disallowed for a tight off-side before Sidibi failed to beat Merchant in a one-on-one situation on 68 minutes, the keeper doing well to make a block.
The winner came on 78 minutes when a free kick, clearly not taken from near to where the infringement took place, deflected off Wayne Turk to beat Connor Johns.
Highworth pushed for a third equaliser but it was the home side who came closest to scoring again but Johns did well to block a close range effort.
Disappointing to report a second successive defeat but half way through their fist season at this level Highworth can be reasonably happy with a record of : P19 W6 D7 L6 and 25 points.
