Worthians lose out late on
By Derek Lloyd
Highworth Town 3-4 Bideford AFC
Bideford set out on the long journey home with all 3 points having won the game in the 86th minute when the impressive Sean Downing was allowed far too much space to close down on goal and beat Connor Johns with a low shot. Having come from behind three times, Highworth may consider this defeat a bit harsh but poor defending just after their own third goal proved decisive.
The game was 47 seconds old when the visitors took the lead through Downing who reacted quickest of all after Johns parried his first effort to shoot home.
Wayne Turk had a goal disallowed for Highworth for offside before Ashan Holgate equalised on 15 minutes, heading home a Sean Wood cross.
After 26 minutes, Kevin Squire put the visitors ahead again with a great volley from 15 yards out and half-time was reached at 1-2.
Highworth were level on 50 minutes when Ash Edenborough converted a penalty after Darren Jefferies was fouled in the box and could have led after 66 minutes when Bideford cleared off their goal-line but Bideford went ahead for a third time when Ben Carter curled in a free kick from 20 yards out on 74 minutes.
Another equaliser came on 83 minutes when Edenborough was fouled in the box, for which Ben Palmer received a second yellow card, and Callum Parsons scored from the spot.
A point apiece would have been a fair result but Downing's winner left Highworth to rue those defensive lapses.
