On a miserably wet afternoon at Yarnton Road Highworth beat Southern League Division 1 Central side Kidlington (and former Hellenic League adversaries) in a competitive pre-season game which was feisty at times particularly in the first half.
There were few chances for either side in the first 45 minutes but half time arrived with the visitors a goal to the good courtesy of a splendid Toumani Sidibe free kick on 22 mins which was struck sweetly into the keeper's top left hand corner.
Highworth could have been further ahead immediately after the break when a Steve Robertson effort clipped the underside of the bar and a post with the follow up effort from Darren Jeffries somehow being kept out by the keeper.
It was however 2-0 on 49 minutes when a Sidibi cross from the right eventually fell to Jeffries who calmly beat a defended on the inside before slotting home.
Kidlington then got into the game with several crosses not quite finding anyone on the end of them and Highworth's back four making several important blocks and interventions.
Patterson did pull a goal back for the home side on 86 minutes with a close range effort high into the net but Highworth saw the game out with no further alarms.
Next Saturday we are off to Didcot Town, 3.00 pm ko.
